Professional Career 

John Paul Torres is a dedicated public servant and lifelong resident of Michigan's 11th Congressional District whose extensive career in the judicial and educational systems is rooted in his working-class upbringing. For over a decade, John Paul has served as an elected School Board Trustee for the Waterford School District, where he has been a steadfast advocate for union workers and successfully fought to prevent the privatization of essential school services. His professional background includes significant leadership roles within the Michigan court system, having served as a Probation Officer in the Detroit Mental Health Court, a Juvenile Court Administrator for the Michigan Circuit Court, and a Juvenile Drug Treatment Court Program Manager.

 

As an analyst in Juvenile Justice Services Reform for the Michigan Supreme Court’s State Administrative Office, he co-led an inaugural team of experts to enact one of the largest juvenile justice reforms in the country, focusing on community-based alternatives to detention. A former Congressional Fellow and adjunct Professor of Political Science, John Paul holds a Master of Public Administration from the University of Michigan and remains committed to utilizing his 25 years of experience in government administration to champion the needs of working families in Washington.
